Cape May Court House – The first Cape May County 4-H Meet the Breeds event held on February 28 at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County was a huge success. More than 75 members of the public attended the new event including representatives of 30 families and some 45 kids in kindergarten through 8th grade.
Everyone came to have fun and learn about rabbits and other small animals at the free event. They learned breed specific characteristics, grooming requirements, temperaments and how to select the perfect small animal for their family through hands-on activities and games. There were 18 rabbit and guinea pig breeds on hand including the mini rex, holland lop, French angora, lionhead and netherland dwarf.
“Helping to make the event a success, were the ten 4-H youth members and fifteen 4-H adult volunteers who shared breed knowledge, daily care requirements, what to feed and so much more. Plus, a scavenger hunt took the youth around the room and guided their learning,” said Donna Griebau, 4-H Program Associate for Cape May County. “We were excited to meet so many new families and introduce them to the Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program. We are already planning our next Meet the Breeds event,” added Griebau.
