Cape May Court House – The 2023 Master Gardener Program of Cape May County took its first field trip to the Cape May Winery on April 15, 2023. Students Mark Whitehead, Evelyn Miles, Sheryl Coleman, and Barbara Hilyard were guided through the Winery by Jackson Sole, Cape May Winery Assistant Winemaker.
The focus of the field trip was for participants to learn about vine growing, maintenance, and different types of grapes. Claudia Gil Arroyo, Ph.D., Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent III, Cape May County, said, “The goal of this field trip was to complement the online classes that the students have been taking as part of the Gardening Education Series, and see real life examples of some of the topics covered including botany, pruning, vegetables, and small fruits just to name a few.”
Participation in the Gardening Education Series, a horticultural education program for home gardeners, is a requirement for the Master Gardener Program of Cape May County. Upcoming field trips will include visits to the Plant Materials Center, Seashore Flower Farm, Stone Circle Farm, and the ACUA. To become a Rutgers Master Gardener in Cape May County, students must complete 60 hours of training that consists of 32 hours from the Gardening Education Series and 28 additional training hours that include local field trips, in person presentations, online recorded content, quizzes, and volunteer training.
