Rutgers Cooperative Extension Family and Community Health Sciences Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group will hold a meeting on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, New Jersey. The building is handicap accessible.
The guest speaker will be E. Marie Hayes, Cape May County Surrogate. She will provide information on making a Will and why it is important to have a Will. Surrogate Hayes was appointed Surrogate of Cape May County in 2023 and elected to the Office in November 2023. As Surrogate, Hayes is the Judge of the Surrogate’s Court which is almost certain to touch the lives of County residents at some time. Aside from the appointment of a guardian for a minor who comes into an estate, or the supervision of an adoption, or a sanity hearing, for example, it is increasingly common, after a death, to visit the Surrogate’s Court for the appointment of someone to handle the estate of the deceased.
Chris Zellers, MMP, Family and Community Health Sciences Educator/Assistant Professor, oversees the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program that meets 10 months each year providing information and support to Cape May County grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Zellers said, “I am honored to have Surrogate Hayes talk to our grandparents about the services her office provides with a focus on Wills – an important topic as our grandparents navigate this new responsibility.”
New families are always welcome! Childcare will be provided and a light supper will be served at 5:00 p.m. with the program following at 5:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend, however, advanced registration is required by April 19, 2024. Please email morgan.gifford@co.cape-may.nj.us or call (609) 465-5115, ext. 3609 for more information or to register for the program.
