Cape May Court House – Congratulations to Cape May County 4-H Member Amelia Worthington who has been accepted to attend the NJ 4-H Scientific Hands-On Research Knowledge (4-H S.H.A.R.K.) Program from April 19 through April 22, 2024.
The S.H.A.R.K. Program is a once in a lifetime opportunity that allows 10 kids from NJ 4-H to travel to Biscayne Bay in Florida and spend four days on the Research Vessel Garvin. “During her time on the boat, Amelia will be able to do real field research alongside experienced marine scientists by catching, measuring, and taking shark fin clips. Through this program Amelia hopes to gain a better understanding of the issues facing sharks,” said Linda Horner, Cape May County 4-H Program Coordinator.
Amelia, a 10th grader, is an active member of the Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program and is in the Kitchen Phanatics, Scales and Tails, Tightlines, and Teen Ambassadors 4-H Clubs. The S.H.A.R.K. program is offered to high functioning young people who have a demonstrated track record of excellence. Students invited to participate in this program spend time in-state attending virtual sessions learning, among other things, ongoing issues in marine science, careers in marine biology, and research taking place in Biscayne Bay.
“We are excited and proud that Amelia was chosen for this exceptional program, she will make Cape May County proud,” added Horner. Data collected in this program will be used for actual scientific applications, including but not limited to academic publications.
