Cape May Court House – The Cape May County 4-H Foundation, Inc. is honored to host a ceremony for the proper disposal of American flags at this year’s 4-H Fair. The 7th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony, a solemn event, will take place Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the flagpole near the Carol and Ralph Porch 4-H Fair Stage on the 4-H Fairgrounds, 355 Court House – South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, New Jersey. The annual 4-H fair runs July 18, 19, and 20th. This year’s theme is Oh, the Places We Will Go with 4-H!
Ronald Day, CMC 4-H Foundation director, will coordinate the ceremony that consists of the playing of the National Anthem with the Cape May County Sheriff’s Honor Guard presenting colors, patriotic readings, and an explanation of the meaning of the different parts of the flag. Cape May County Commissioners, other local dignitaries, and representatives of various veterans’ groups from throughout the county, including VFW and American Legion organizations, have been invited to participate in the program.
Linda Horner, Cape May County 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator, said, “The Flag Retirement Ceremony has become an important way for 4-H members, volunteers and the community to show their patriotic spirit during the 4-H Fair.”
According to guidelines established by the National Flag Foundation, one flag is selected to be burned during the ceremony as representative of all flags being retired. The rest of the flags are later incinerated.

If You Go to the 2024 4-H Fair…things to know: The annual 4-H Fair runs July 18-20 at the 4-H Fairgrounds, 355 Court House – South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House. This is the 53rd year that the fair has been held on the current 4-H Fairgrounds. The 7th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
Public hours for the fair are 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (All vendors will be open by 3 p.m.), and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. The Board of Agriculture’s famous Chicken Bar-B-Que sells out quickly each evening. Tickets will go on sale starting at 4 pm each day at the Fairgrounds. There will be no advance sales of tickets this year. Dinner will be served starting at 5 p.m. Admission to the 4-H Fair is free and there is a host of fun events planned, live entertainment, amusement rides, carnival games, and a variety of vendors.
Limited premium parking is available at the Atlantic Cape Community College campus, located next door to the fairgrounds, for a suggested $10 donation. Free parking is available at the Cape May County Park and Zoo with free, air-conditioned shuttle service to the fair provided by Fare Free Transportation. Buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and fully handicapped accessible. Please note: No dogs permitted, except for certified service animals.
