Cape May Court House – Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources will host the four session workshop series, “Start Your Gardens: Everything you need to know about starting a vegetable garden from planning & planting to harvesting.” This four-session series will take place in January, February, April, and June at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, 355 Courthouse – South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210., Classes are open to all skill levels.
The main instructor is Jen Sawyer Caraballo, Program Associate, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County. “Over the past four years we have seen a definite increase in the number of people reaching out to our office about growing vegetables at home. What better way to help budding gardeners than with a four series course that helps them get set up for a successful growing season,” said Sawyer Caraballo
The four sessions will be broken down as follows:
January 15, 2025, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Class 1: “Garden Planning & Soil Basics” will go over soil health, how to test your soil, garden planning, site selection & preparation. The cost for this class is $25 and includes a soil test kit. Register at https://go.rutgers.edu/s5k8836d.
February 12, 2025, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Class 2: “Seed Starting & Seedling Care” will cover seed starting, selecting seeds and supplies, how to care for their seedlings as well as when and how to plant and companion planting ideas. The cost will be $15 and includes seed starts to take home.
April 16, 2025, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Class 3, “Planting and Plant Care” will cover succession planting, companion planting, and plant care including watering, fertilizing, staking, as well as common pests and diseases that may affect their gardens. The cost for this session is $10.
June 18, 2025, 6:30-8:00 p.m. Class 4, “Harvesting, Preserving and Extending the Season” will cover when to harvest and ways to use and store your vegetables. The cost for this class is $10.
